Shelden DeMar Williams was born on October 21, 1983 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. From an early age, it was apparent that he had a special talent for the game of basketball and by high school it was clear that he was more than just another good athlete. At Midwest City High School, Shelden was twice voted Gatorade Oklahoma Player of the Year, and in 2001 was selected as the Oklahoma Player of the Year by both USA Today and the Daily Oklahoman, in addition to being named a Parade All American. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in high school. His star performances at Midwest City led him to famed Duke University where his reputation for tenacious defense and aggressive game play would be upheld. A standout player for the Blue Devils, Shelden received many accolades for his performances, most notably for his defensive performances. Shelden holds records at Duke including: career blocks, single-season blocks, and career rebounding records. However, he has proven that he is a threat on both sides of the floor as he is also only the third player in ACC history to reach 1,500 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 350 blocks, joining the exclusive company of Tim Duncan and Ralph Sampson. At 69 and 250 pounds, it is no surprise that Shelden ranks 17th on the NCAA career blocks list where he sits among such legends as Alonzo Mourning, Tim Duncan, and Emeka Okafor. Shelden has also represented USA Basketball where he captained the 2005 World University Games Team to the gold medal in Izmir, Turkey. In 2006, Shelden was voted as an Associated Press and John R. Wooden First Team All American and was the National Association of Basketball Coaches Defensive Player of the Year in both 2005 and 2006. Sheldens collegiate accomplishments did not go unnoticed as he was drafted as the 5th pick in the 2006 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. Shelden appeared in 81 games for the Hawks as a rookie and was named the NBA Rookie of the Month for April 2007. After his rookie year Shelden was dealt to Sacramento where he played in 28 games before being traded back to the Hawks. Shelden also had stints in Minnesota, Sacramento again, and in 2009-2010 helped the Boston Celtics to the NBA Finals where they fell in 7 games to the Lakers. In the summer of 2010 Shelden signed a 1-year contract with the Denver Nuggets. It appears that good things come in pairs as Shelden is married to University of Tennessee and WNBA star Candace Parker . Candace, a living legend in the sport of womens basketball , and Shelden gave birth to a Lailaa Williams in 2009.

Community

In each city that Shelden has called home, he's made a commitment to getting out in the community and doing his part to make a difference. Shelden understands that he is in a very priveledged position in life and strives to use the resources he has to make the world a better place. Shelden and Candace have plans to start their own foundation in the future, but for now Shelden is excited to be in New Jersey and get involved with the Nets' community outreach programs.
